Welcome to the cutting-edge of uphill cycling
and world's most famous ascents of each of the continents
The Republic of Moldova has no mountains worth mentioning, but it does have a hill over 400 metres high about 80 kilometres west of the capital Chisinau. It is located near the village of Balanesti and can be reached by mountain bike, although the last few metres are very steep in muddy clay. The summit is currently being developed into a tourist destination with a barbecue area and covered seating.
Start: Nisporeni 89m
The profile shows a short climb in the starting village of Nisporeni and then a gradual ascent to the village of Balanesti. After that, the last two kilometres are unpaved and very steep.
We leave the village of Nisporeni on a mountain bike rented in Chisinau.
Obtaining information about the condition of the roads was difficult beforehand. But to my pleasant surprise, the road towards Milesti is very well tarmaced.
Along the way and in the small villages, you will see water fountains that are obviously in operation.
Shortly before Balanesti, the road becomes much wider and steeper, but there is very little motorised traffic here.
Balanesti is reached in the best weather.
The scenery changes in the village. The path is no longer paved and continues through narrow alleyways.
Google Maps tells us that it probably continues here. You hardly see any people, all life is hidden behind fences.
The path now becomes very loamy and steep. The clay sticks to the tyres and quickly becomes rock-hard.

Another fountain at the edge of the path. You can't see it in the picture, but the path here is as slippery as soft soap.
The summit has been reached.
