Halfdan 504m

When searching for Iceland's highest mountain road, Halfdan in the Icelandic Westfjords is considered a hot candidate. Several passes are located within a few kilometres of each other here, all of which are between 350m and 500m high. However, there are other well-developed and partially paved roads in the eastern interior of Iceland. For example, Road 910 reaches an altitude of almost 800 metres

Start: Talknafjördur 50m
Altitude gain: 454m
Distance: 7km

Low-hanging clouds over Patreksfjord in the north-western tip of Iceland

My rear derailleur is causing me considerable concern today. The tiny screw that secures the derailleur hanger to the dropout can no longer be tightened. Has the 2,300 km journey suddenly been for nothing? But actually, I manage to secure the rear derailleur with the thru axle for the rear wheel. Will it hold? So I start cautiously here at Talknafjord. No shifting, fixie style, so to speak.

First look back at the very wet road

At the same spot, looking ahead at the village of Talknafjördur

A few wide curves lead the short way up. The derailleur is holding so far. But I don't dare to shift gears.

The road is wonderful with very little traffic, but unfortunately with terrible weather. You can't see much.

And then you're already at the top. The gear shift held. Visibility is only a few metres, it's extremely uncomfortable here. The cold dampness creeps into every pore of your body. Quickly take a few photos at the summit and then head back down.
